This series is all about celebrating the things that women are, as well as being amazing mothers.  In a world where many women feel like they lose their identity when they become a mum, it is important to celebrate and shout that we might be mums, but we are not only that and we are still a force to be reckoned with.

What makes you more than a mother?

I am Managing Director of Jomas Associates, an engineering and environmental consultancy, which I founded in 2009. We work for land developers (residential, commercial and government bodies), assessing ground conditions before building works can commence. Our investigations enable engineering design in the ground. We also assess and remediate land contamination, allowing reclamation of brownfield/derelict land.  Along with my amazing staff, I have grown the business from zero to a £2m turnover in 2017.

Are people surprised when they realise you are more than a mum? Does that bother you?

People are astounded that I run a thriving engineering business, while being mother to three boys. It doesn’t bother me at all. I thoroughly enjoy disrupting the landscape of the predominantly male-led construction industry. Being a mother is not an impediment to running a business, and many mothers are successful entrepreneurs.

What challenges do you face when you’re juggling motherhood and being more than a mum?

The main challenge is indeed juggling. Running a business in the construction industry requires juggling, with many rapidly changing timelines.  Being a mother has taught me the act of balancing various tasks and prioritising accordingly. Having a support network is crucial, and I am blessed to have an amazing family around me. They ensure that I do not feel guilty for spending a few extra hours at work, as I know my children are in safe hands when I am not there.

How long did it take you to remember you were more than a mother after you had your child(ren)?

I never had a chance to forget….I took only a few months off after my first two boys, but didnt get to take any time off after my third son. It was multi-tasking of the highest order!

Who, or what, helps you to make time for yourself? What do you do to escape the stresses of motherhood?

My family and to be fair….my children…They are wonderful boys and they do let mummy have some time to escape…albeit very very limited time….

What advice would you offer a mum who might not be feeling like they are more than someones mum right now?

I believe that I am a much better and happier mum because I am more than just a mother. I have time to, pursue a career I enjoy immensely, to grow my business and also give time to empower other women. I believe this sets an example to my children to strive to be the best they can be.
It is important that all mothers pursue their own dreams outside of mothering, to ensure they have personal satisfaction.

Any advice for someone who is going through the same things as you are right now?

Go for it. Its mind blowing!

Who would you like to see featured next in the series?

 Oprah Winfrey!
*hmmm.. not sure I’ll manage that one*
